Passenger’s View
Documentary photography series, Tunis, 2024
Passenger’s View developed during my time living in Tunis, through the repeated movement of daily commutes. Photographed from the position of a passenger, the series follows the city through passing encounters, gestures, streets, and moments that appear briefly before disappearing again.
For nearly seven months, I did not take a photograph.
I watched. I learned the pace of the city, its movements and nuances, and became increasingly conscious of what I later described in my writing for SENS Magazine as “the weight of the camera.” The weight was not only physical. It carried the question of when observation becomes documentation, and the responsibility that comes with pointing a camera toward a place and people I was still learning to know.
When I eventually began photographing, the process became instinctive. Movement, blur, obstruction, and imperfection were allowed to remain. The images emerged from the instability of being in transit, while my own position was also shifting somewhere between visitor and resident, observer and participant.
Passenger’s View is shaped as much by the months in which I did not photograph as by the moment I finally raised the camera. It holds that negotiation between witnessing and recording, and the changing relationship to a city that slowly became familiar.
Selections from the series later travelled with Memories Carried, an international touring exhibition presented across Birmingham, Newcastle, London, Berlin, and Paris. Prints from the project were sold through the initiative, with all proceeds directed toward Palestinian organizations including Al-Haq, Al Mezan, the Ghassan Abu Sittah Children’s Fund, and Health Workers for Palestine.
